Let’s Stroll Down Old Street!

Back to St Maarten today!

Because we had to travel during the school holidays we were often in the Caribbean during hurricane season and in St Maarten we were hit by a tropical storm! We'd discovered a box of matches and a candle in one of the drawers in our room and as the weather worsened one evening we decided to pass the time playing pontoon and broke the matches into little pieces to use as ''chips'', our makeshift casino was fun until we were hit by a power cut ..... you guessed it, we couldn’t light the candle because all our matches were broken up! Early night!
Regardless of whether in Marigot or Philipsburg; St Maarten/St Martin was about jewels ....... as a jewellery lover I've visited jewellers all over the world but what this tiny island had on offer was just amazing! The Queen and Liz Taylor would have loved it ..... serious bling! Tiaras, amazing necklaces with hundreds of carats of diamonds, emeralds, sapphires and rubies were to be seen even in the tiniest jewellers; luxury brand watches piled up on the counter tops in hundreds. Never thought I could ever see too many diamonds...... but it was even too much for me!

Coconuts seem to play a role in lots of our holidays, in Mexico my daughter and her friend fell in love with a coconut whom they called Baby Herman! Spoiled rotten that coconut (had his own sun lounger, lilo and was smothered in suntan lotion) .... here in St Martin I returned from a jog to find my family trying to cut down a coconut from the tree by piling crates on a wobbly table and climbing on top of them, then  using a restaurant butter knife instead of a machete! The attempt was successful but my daughter was hit on the shoulder by the falling booty, it tasted great nevertheless!
St Maarten/St Martin, you were quirky, friendly and a pleasure to visit; love to be there right now!
